The year was 1782, and the young Frenchwoman Jacilene, at 30 years old, was experiencing a major change in her life. Born and raised in the high courts of Paris, Jacilene could not adapt to the prevailing societal model in her country at the time.
Jacilene was radical and set off for a different place. She left her country, a free and sovereign nation, and ventured into a colony of another country, far from Europe. Jacilene went to Portuguese America, where Brazil is currently located.
She disembarked in Rio de Janeiro and from there, went to Vila Rica, at the time the capital of Minas Gerais.
During the journey, which lasted several days, Jacilene, on the ship, contemplated the sea, dreaming of the revolution that would put an end to absolutism in France, as well as remembering the difficult relationship with her parents, staunch absolutists.
Jacilene kept her distance from the people on the ship. She thought to herself:
"I left my country, my relatives, my homeland, my people... I keep wondering what will become of me?"
Little did Jacilene know that she would become a great Enlightenment figure in Minas Gerais and help found a city in the interior of Pernambuco...
