Niece of state representative Moab and sister of councilman Marco Aurélio, the young Branquinha, a determined and intelligent woman, has as her best friend the teacher and historian Ana Karina, whom she treats like a sister. Ana Karina, great-granddaughter of teacher Issa and a descendant of slaves, was Secretary of Education in Lagoa da Italianinha and even ran for mayor of the city.
This friendship, however, does not please Branquinha's relatives very much. One of the most critical is Danúzia, Branquinha's cousin, who thinks it's wrong for her cousin to associate with "Afro-descendants".
But Branquinha doesn't listen to the criticism. One morning, she even invited Ana Karina to her house, and the two talked for a long time by the pool. Branquinha and Ana Karina talked a lot about politics and the history of Lagoa da Italianinha. At night, the two went out and went to the library for a conversation about history, and they were also with Eraldo and Valdenes.
