Ilene, Isaías, Dina, and Suely: beauty is a choice

Suely’s sister, Ilene, was visiting with her son, Isaías.

In the middle of the conversation, Isaías looked at his cousin Dina and teased:

“You look like an alien.”

Dina and Suely are bald. Not because of medical treatment, but by choice. They like it that way. They feel beautiful, practical, and free.

Suely, who is a judge, turned serious immediately.

“Sister, teach your son some manners. In this house, we respect each other's choices.”

Ilene felt awkward. She took Isaías and left.

After they left, Suely sat down with Dina. Jokingly, she said:

“So, how about letting your hair grow out a little?”

Dina laughed, ran her hand over her head, and replied:

“No way, Mom. I love being bald. And beautiful. Just like you.”

They looked at each other and smiled. Because for them, beauty isn't about conforming to a standard. It’s a choice.

Later, Ilene called. She said she had talked to Isaías about respect—about not mocking other people's bodies or decisions. Because what looks different to some is a source of self-confidence for others.

Dina remains the same: she loves looking good, wearing big earrings and red lipstick, and keeping her head shaved close.

Suely is the same way. Two women who decided that being bald is empowering.

Food for thought:

Mocking doesn't teach; respect does.

And being happy in your own way bothers those who haven't found themselves yet.
