One afternoon in 1788, Regina was walking through the forest near Vila Rica, close to the lake, when she found her friend, the Frenchwoman Jacilene, in the water. Regina said:
"Jacilene, what are you doing there?"
"I'm swimming a little, clearing my head and thinking."
"Thinking about what? Can you tell me?"
"Nothing much..."
Jacilene got out of the water and said:
"I'm very sad about Miss Adriana, she mistreats the slave Gilmara very much, and I see her daughter Mariana even mocking the situation..."
"I told you when you arrived here that Miss Adriana is very mean."
"It's true. I don't think I'll last much longer in that house."
"Why?"
"Well, she'll probably throw me out," said Jacilene.
"Maybe so, she's capable of even worse."
"That's true."
Regina and Jacilene chatted on the way back to the city.
