In 1935, Maria Clara, a barefoot peasant girl and daughter of indigenous people, with her innocence and gentleness, was in Vila Dourada when, feeling very hot, she entered the fountain in the town's main square. She, who lived in a hut on the Maniçoba farm, passing through the municipal headquarters, felt the urge to go into the water.
Some people watched her with ironic and mocking tones. Janaína, who sold food there, the beggar Valdinha, Father Francisco and Sister Renata Augusta, as well as the devout Lady Andréia and her daughters Gisella and Allana Hevellyn, watched with a mixture of mockery and scandal.
Teacher Cicleide passed by her and said:
- What are you doing there, young lady?
- I'm taking a bath, ma'am. It's very hot.
- Get out of there, people are looking at you. They're finding it strange...
- Oh, why? Am I doing something wrong?
- Well, for them, yes. Taking a bath in the fountain.
Maria Clara left the fountain, saying:
- Well, ma'am, at least I'm not feeling hot anymore. I'll leave with my dress wet, but it will dry along the way.
- And where do you live?
- Maniçoba Farm, far from here.
- And how did you get here?
- Walking!
Cicleide was startled and said:
- Walking???? This farm is very far.
- I'm used to it...
Maria Clara said goodbye to Cicleide and returned to the farm.
